Sedation Dentistry
For most people around, going to the dentist can be a nightmare. People associate the procedure of treating gums and teeth with fear, mainly because of the perception of pain that is attached to the process. So if you are one of them, then sedation dentistry can prove to be helpful. This can reduce your anxiety about pain, and the process can be used for all dental procedures.
Sedation dentistry is the process that would help you to relax during dental treatments. There are four types of sedation available, namely minimal sedation, medium sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia. Depending on the intensity of the procedure, your dentist would give you the required sedation.
Who can have Sedation dentistry?
People with the following problems can be given sedation dentistry:
- Have a lower pain threshold
- Have very sensitive teeth
- Have bad gag reflex
- Have multiple dental procedures to complete
Many times, children who are terrified with dental proceedings are given sedation. The dentist keeps in mind all the factors and give minimal oral sedation to the dentists which would do the work for them. So if your child is going to have dental treatment, do not worry about the pain or side effects of the sedation given to them.
Choices for Dental Sedation
There are different choices of dental sedation available with your dentist, some of them have been listed below:
- Laughing gas- This is used in most of the dental procedures because it is safe and effective. It can be used with the help of a machine which would further reduce the uneasiness that is caused by injections.
- Enteral Sedation- This comes in the form of pills or liquid and is taken orally.
- Intra-veinous Sedation- Here the sedative is directly injected into the vein and hence the effect stays for quite long.
- General Anesthesia- This is done by injecting drugs directly into the veins.
Using nitrous oxide or laughing gas is the easiest way to sedate, however, one would need training and licenses to use the other types.
