Sinus Augmentation
A sinus lift surgery or sinus augmentation is done to add bones to the upper jaw in the area where your premolars and molars exist. The sinus in your nose is lifted and hence the name. This procedure is carried out by specialist surgeons or a periodontist.
When it is needed?
This is needed when you do not have enough bones in your jaws or when your sinuses are very close to your jaws, so much so that implants could not be placed there. There can be a number of reasons behind this:
- Anatomy of skull
- Periodontal diseases
- When teeth go missing for a long time, then bone loss occurs simultaneously
Not everyone with molar and premolar teeth implants would need to go through this procedure. However, if you have any of the above conditions, you would need to undergo this before opting for an implant.
Preparation
The bone used to do a sinus lift comes from your own body. It can be taken from any area of your mouth or body like hips or tibia. In case that is not possible, then a synthetic material is used, which is efficient and safe to be used. Your dentist would initially conduct an X-ray or perhaps an advanced CT Scan to understand the conditions of your jaws and sinus. In case you suffer from seasonal allergies, do inform your dentist about the same and avoid the procedure during that time of the year.
Procedure
Your dentist would cut the gum tissues exposing the bones. There is a membrane lining the sinus, which is pushed up and away from your jaws. Granules of bone graft materials are now placed in the open space to fill up. Once this is done, your implants would be filled up after four to nine months, depending on the number of bones. This would enable the grafted materials to mesh with your bones.
