Crown lengthening

Gummy smile is a common problem for many people across the globe. Due to the over-exposure of gums, their teeth appear small which can be an aesthetic concern for some individuals. One of the best dental treatment, to correct this problem is crown lengthening.

The procedure basically involves the reshaping of excess gum and bone tissues so that more of the natural tooth can be exposed. This procedure can be used to support restorative or cosmetic dentistry and the aim of the treatment is to bring up more of your natural teeth.

The procedure

This is a minor surgical procedure wherein you would be able to go back home post the treatment is over. The time of surgery depends on the number of teeth for which you are availing the treatment. If you are availing for both bones and soft tissues to be removed, then it would take more time compared to when only soft tissues would need to be removed. During the surgery, you would be given local anesthesia. The periodontists would basically cut the gums and pull it away from teeth. This would expose your roots and bones. The tissues are then reshaped gradually.

Follow-up

Post the surgery, for the next few hours, you can use ice cubes all over the face which would help to reduce the swelling. Your dentist would keep a follow-up appointment to cut the stitches. You would also be asked to come for another follow-up appointment 4-6 weeks later to check if everything is working fine. You would notice that the gums would shrink as they heal.

You might experience a minor pain once the effect of the sedation is over. You would be given pain killers for this along with mouthwash that would help your gums to heal. It would take around 3 months for the gums to heal fully, but you would be able to perform all your natural activities during that period. Only the first two or three days after the surgery, you would need to be a bit careful and not perform any strenuous activities.
