Scaling and root planing are the most famous and widely accepted ways to cure initial gum diseases. Gum diseases are generally caused by bacteria in the form of plaque and tartar. If they get accumulated in your gum line, then it would lead to the formation of pockets. One cannot remove the pockets by regular brushing and that is when the above treatments can prove to be very helpful.
The main reason behind the formation of pockets is improper oral hygiene practices. You should follow the proper dental regime of brushing and flossing regularly. Avoid sweets and refrain from drinking caffeine and other beverages. Do not forget to wash your mouth properly after each meal so that food particles do not remain stuck to your teeth.
Does the procedure hurt?
Most of the people avoid dental visits as they assume that the procedures would really hurt. But that is not the case every time. During a scaling procedure, the dentist would numb the gum area and roots with local anesthesia. You might experience a bit of discomfort during the whole treatment process.
Remember to inform the dentist of your total health history before he can start up with any procedure. If you are prone to infection, then be careful as the bacteria might get released to your bloodstream causing more difficulties.
