Pocket Reduction

In the absence of proper dental hygiene, bacteria in the mouth forms a sticky film called plaque on the teeth and around the gums. If not removed on time, the plaque hardens to form tartar that can only be removed by professional cleaning. The swelling due to this plaque and tartar can cause the formation of pockets as the gums tend to move away from the teeth.

When pockets are formed, more plaque and tartar gets deposited there. This would make the pockets deeper and also erode the surrounding bones. In order to prevent all of these, pocket reduction surgery is conducted by periodontists. The dentists would fold back the gums and then clean up the pockets so as to free it from all bacterial secretions.

The surgery procedure

This basically begins with flap surgery. The gum after being separated from the teeth is attached to a new position. This would also include resizing and reshaping the bones. The surgery starts by lifting and rolling the gum creating a flap. Then all the tartar and bacteria are removed from the root along with the diseased gum tissues. Then the bones are shaped if needed then necessary substances are added so that the tissues can heal. The gums are then sewed which reduces the pocket. You might have to undergo some dressing sessions so that the wounded area gets healed quickly. Once that is accomplished, the stitches are removed.

The results

The results of pocket reduction surgery is truly commendable. You would get healthy gums, be able to save your jawbones from eroding and be able to maintain that beautiful smile. The deeper the pockets are, the more difficult it would get for your dentist to clean it. Thus it is important to conduct a pocket reduction surgery.

With reduced pockets and daily proper dental hygiene regimes, you would be able to maintain your oral health properly. This is important not only for a beautiful smile but also for maintaining your overall health conditions.
