Inlays and Onlays
Dental Inlays are used instead of fillings to replace a small amount of decayed tooth structure. The tooth-colored inlays are bonded to the tooth and replace the defective fillings. On the other hand, Onlays also fits inside the tooth but extends back to the chewing surface to the back tooth. Both of these are a form of indirect restoration.
Indications
Both of them are basically used when your teeth are weekend and need extensive restoration. Inlays are used when there is a problem with direct fillings as metal inlays are more superior when it comes to strength. However, they cannot be put to use when you have:
- Poor oral condition
- Parafunctional habits and heavy occlusal forces
- Under the age of 16 years
- Problems with dental impressions
Materials used
Here are a few materials using which Inlays and Onlays are made:
- Gold
- Ceramic
- Composite
- Metal ceramic
Benefits
The main benefit of Inlays and Onlays is that it can protect the weak areas of the teeth. The Inlays involves the porcelain to be bonded with the tooth’s center. It is done to superfit, and the tooth would also not get discolored like in case of resin fillings over time. Onlays, as the name suggests, goes on the teeth, including at least one of the cusps. This method includes full coverage of the biting surface.
Esthetic Inlays and Onlays have become one of the most reliable dental restorative alternatives. They give the teeth a more enhanced and natural appearance. This is the reason why this treatment method has gained more popularity as patients now are more concerned about the aesthetics of the teeth.
