Crowns
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a tooth to cover them. They fully encase the visible portion of the tooth that lies above the gum line. Dental crowns help in 2 situations, they protect the weak tooth from breaking, and they hold a dental bridge in place.
When are dental crowns needed?
Dental crowns are basically needed in the following situations:
- To hold together parts of a cracked tooth
- To protect the weak tooth from breaking
- To restore already broken tooth
- To cover and support worn-out tooth
- To hold a dental bridge in place
- To cover badly shaped teeth or even the discolored one
- To cover dental implants
- For cosmetic modifications
What are the types of crowns available?
There are different types of crowns available and you can choose anyone among them:
Porcelain fused to metals- They look quite similar to your healthy teeth as they are made adjusting to the colors of your adjacent tooth. They are best when it comes to the aesthetics of a crown.
Resin – These are less expensive, but they wear down quickly over time.
All ceramic / All Porcelain – These are suitable for people with metal allergy and can be used for both front and back teeth.
Temporary and permanent crown – As the name suggests, temporary ones can be used for a few days while the permanent ones are for long term usage and are constructed in a dental lab.
A dental crown can last between 5 to 15years depending on its “wear and tear.” This entirely depends on how properly you follow your oral hygiene routines. You should also remember that only because the crown covers the teeth, it does not imply that it is protected from gum diseases or decays. Hence maintaining proper oral hygiene is very important.
