Tooth Extractions
Permanent teeth are something that you would never want to lose; however, due to decay or accidents, one might feel the need for tooth extractions. One can also need tooth extractions for orthodontia, whose goal is to align all of your teeth properly. If your natural teeth are too big, then that can be a problem. Periodontal diseases can be another reason for tooth extractions.
The process
Dentists can perform tooth extractions after examining your teeth and their conditions. Before the procedure, your dentist would numb the area with local anesthesia. Now he or she would cut the gums of the concerned tooth, grab it and move back and forth to loosen it from the roots. If it’s hard to remove at a go, then it would be removed in pieces.
Why opt for tooth extractions?
There can be many reasons that can lead to tooth extractions, some of it would include:
- Trauma or disease- Sudden accidents and tooth decays are the most common reasons behind extracting teeth. Cracked teeth can cause bigger problems and would not function properly. That is when tooth extraction can prove to be very helpful.
- Orthodontic treatments- In cases of crowding, extractions can open up a lot of spaces so that all the other teeth can be aligned properly.
- Wisdom teeth- If not aligned properly, they can cause a lot of pain. Extracting them is the only choice to get rid of that pain.
- Baby teeth- Many times, baby teeth get out of position and removing them might prevent the future need for heavy orthodontic treatments.
Post the procedure
Once the tooth extraction procedure is over, you can follow the below steps to minimize discomfort:
- Take the prescribed painkillers
- Relax for the next 24 hours and reduce the next 48 hour’s activity
- After 24 hours of the process, rinse your mouth with salt and lukewarm water
- Eat soft food and with passing time, you can add solid food to your diet.
It is normal to experience some discomfort and pains after the effects of anesthesia wear off. You can expect some swelling and residual bleeding post the procedure. In case you suffer too much pain, do not hesitate to call your dentist immediately.
